RyChol from the Medical Nutritional Institute is an extended-release tablet that works on cholesterol in more than one way. Plant sterols reduce cholesterol absorption in the gut, apple polyphenols reduce fat absorption, and berberine supports the liver's clearance of LDL cholesterol. It is used by adults with raised cholesterol who are not yet on medication, and it can be taken alongside a prescribed statin. Plant sterols have a structure similar to cholesterol and compete with it for absorption in the gut, which lowers the amount of LDL cholesterol entering the bloodstream. Berberine, the active alkaloid in barberry root, activates AMPK, the cell's energy sensor, which improves insulin sensitivity and supports healthy blood glucose and lipid metabolism.
Cholesterol has no symptoms. The first sign is often a heart attack. If your cholesterol is creeping up but is not yet at the point of needing a statin, or you want to support the effect of your statin, reducing cholesterol absorption is a logical step.
