Neutrogena Blackhead Eliminating Daily Scrub is a daily exfoliating wash built for blackheads, the oxidised plugs of sebum and dead cells that sit in open pores across the nose, chin and forehead. Salicylic acid, being oil-soluble, penetrates the pore to dissolve the plug from the inside, which surface scrubbing alone cannot do, while gentle exfoliating particles lift the dead cells that trap oil and give skin a rough texture. The formula is oil-free and non-comedogenic, rinses clean and is designed for daily use. Over weeks it reduces the number of blackheads, keeps pores looking smaller and skin smoother, and it makes a good base for an oil-free moisturiser.

Blackheads cannot be scrubbed off; the plug sits inside the pore and needs an oil-soluble acid to dissolve it, which is exactly what salicylic acid does. A daily scrub with salicylic acid works from inside the pore and on the surface, which is why it clears blackheads where plain scrubs fail.
