Gelatin tannate is a different approach to diarrhoea: instead of paralysing the gut like loperamide, the tannate forms a protective protein film over the inflamed intestinal lining, binding irritants and calming the inflamed surface so the gut can settle itself. It acts entirely inside the bowel, nothing is absorbed, and gut motility is left alone, which is why it can be considered where motility-stopping drugs are avoided. European trial evidence is modest but supportive for reducing stool frequency in acute episodes. The adult 12-capsule pack covers a full episode at the 500mg strength.

Most acute diarrhoea is an inflamed gut lining doing its job too vigorously. A film that soothes and protects that lining, without the risks of stopping the gut dead, is a sensible middle path, always alongside the rehydration that is the actual treatment. It also suits the working adult mid-episode: nothing sedating, nothing motility-stopping, just a calmer gut while the day goes on.
