Gelatin tannate is a different approach to diarrhoea: instead of paralysing the gut like loperamide, the tannate forms a protective protein film over the inflamed intestinal lining, binding irritants and calming the inflamed surface so the gut can settle itself. It acts entirely inside the bowel, nothing is absorbed, and gut motility is left alone, which is why it can be considered where motility-stopping drugs are avoided. European trial evidence is modest but supportive for reducing stool frequency in acute episodes. The paediatric 10-sachet pack covers a single child's episode, dosed by age, ORS alongside always.

Most acute diarrhoea is an inflamed gut lining doing its job too vigorously.
