The first-aid workhorse for disinfecting intact skin, instruments and thermometers.

The traditional antiseptics, spirit, peroxide, gentian violet and their kin, are effective germ-killers whose place modern wound care has redrawn: superb for disinfecting intact skin, instruments and surfaces, and specifically discouraged inside open wounds, where the same chemistry that kills microbes damages the healing cells, slowing closure. The modern rule is simple: clean wounds with saline or clean water, use these on the unbroken skin around them, and let the classics do the jobs they are still best at. 20-volume (6%) hydrogen peroxide is the oxidising cleaner: dentures, surfaces, stain lifting and hair jobs; its traditional headline use, pouring into wounds, is now specifically discouraged because it damages healing tissue, so sell it as the utility chemical it is.
Every first-aid drawer needs a skin disinfectant; it just should not be poured into the cut itself. Sold with that one modern correction, these classics remain excellent value. A properly stocked first-aid drawer also saves clinic visits for the scrapes and jobs that never needed one, which is what these bottles have quietly done for a century.
