Borstol is a South African heritage chest remedy little changed in a century: ammonium chloride as an old-pharmacopoeia expectorant, with senega root, buchu, camphor spirit, cinchona tincture, sulphur balsam and gum turpentine in an alcohol base of nearly 16 percent. Ammonium chloride genuinely loosens secretions modestly, the aromatics deliver the sharp medicinal taste generations associate with a chest cold being treated, and the rest is tradition. It sells on trust and taste memory, and deserves honest framing as a traditional remedy rather than a modern evidenced expectorant. The orange 50ml flavours the heritage formula for those who want the tradition without the full sharpness.
Some customers judge a chest medicine by whether it tastes like their grandmother's cure, and this is that medicine. As traditional symptomatic support with a real if modest expectorant salt, it has an honest place. It also keeps the traditional customer inside a counselled sale, where the two-week rule and the red flags actually get said.
