Night gels and ointments are the heavy artillery of dry eye: thick carbomer or paraffin bases that cling to the eye surface for hours, protecting it through the long blink-free stretch of sleep. Eyes that wake gritty, stuck or painful are usually drying out overnight, sometimes because the lids do not fully close, and no daytime drop survives until morning. The trade-off is blur, which is why these belong to the last minutes before sleep, paired with lighter drops for the day. Duratears ointment is the classic paraffin-lanolin night formulation, the heaviest protection on the shelf for eyes that dry out through sleep.
