Diosmectite is a purified natural clay with a layered structure that binds bacteria, viruses, toxins and excess water as it passes through the gut, while reinforcing the protective mucus barrier of the intestinal lining. Meta-analyses of randomised trials credit it with shortening acute diarrhoea by roughly a day. Its story changed in 2019, when lead traces found in clay sources led European authorities to advise against use in children under two and in pregnancy, so it is now properly sold as an adult and older-child treatment. Smecta is the French original of the class, the brand the meta-analyses were largely built on, in strawberry sachets.
