Folic Acid Forte provides a high-strength dose of folic acid. The higher dose is recommended by doctors for women with a previous pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect, women with diabetes or epilepsy, those with a high body mass index and people with folate-deficiency anaemia. Folate drives cell division and red blood cell formation and works with vitamin B12 to keep homocysteine in check.

Some women need considerably more folic acid than the standard dose, and most do not know they are in that group. Because the neural tube closes in the first four weeks, every woman who could become pregnant is advised to take folate daily, ideally starting three months before conception.
