Bioplus is one of South Africa's best-known pick-me-up tonics. The syrup combines B-complex vitamins, which the body needs to release energy from food, with caffeine for an immediate lift in alertness. It is made for short-term use during demanding periods: long shifts, exam weeks, recovery after flu or the end-of-year slump. The B vitamins work as a team to release energy from carbohydrate, fat and protein. B1, B6 and B12 also maintain the insulating sheath around nerves, and B6, B12 and folate are needed to make red blood cells and mood-regulating neurotransmitters. Caffeine blocks the adenosine receptors that signal tiredness, giving a quick lift in alertness.
