Chela-Fer is one of the most prescribed iron supplements in South Africa. It uses iron bisglycinate, an amino acid chelate that passes through the stomach intact and is absorbed in the intestine, which means better uptake and far fewer of the usual iron side effects such as nausea and constipation. Folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin C are included to support red blood cell production and iron absorption. It is widely used in pregnancy. Iron is the core of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to every tissue. It is also needed for energy production in muscle and for normal immune and cognitive function. Folate is required to copy DNA and to form red blood cells.
